Top 10 Paris Coffees

Getting a real coffee can be a bit like a treasure hunt in this city — you almost need to plan your day/meeting around it to make sure you get your fix in one of the very few places that know how to make it. There has been a lot of press on the issue recently, and the scene is quickly changing for the better thanks to French-Australian partnerships who are raising the bar, such as Café Lomi who supply most of the places on my list. There is hope, I promise.

Where to get a good Latte / drink real coffee in Paris:

Café Lomi Paris 18eme
Black Market – Paris 18eme
Le Bal Café – Paris 18eme Clichy
KB Café Shop (formerly Kooka Boora) – Paris 9eme
Coutume Café – Paris 7eme
Sugarplum Cakeshop and Café – Paris 5eme
L’inconnu Bar/Café – Paris 10eme
Ten Belles – Paris 10eme
Télescope (great coffee in a central part of town) – Paris 1eme
Vélo Café (mobile coffee cart at Place de la Bourse) – Paris 2eme
Alto Café (mobile coffee cart at Galeries Lafayette and Passage du Havre) – Paris 9eme.

Great List! Just a quick correction — Le Bal is in the 18eme and KB is in the 9eme. Still need to try Telescope and will await the new Lomi opening 🙂

Thanks for that Lynn I have corrected the addresses. Yes definitely check out Telescope- a great spot and really central. Yummy cakes too!

I would also recommend Merce and the Muse for a good latte, not far from République.

Thanks Brandie that was an oversight on my part- I thought I already had it on the list. It’s there now! 🙂

I find It is difficult to enjoy the coffee in Paris, all the coffees taste very strong even with milk and I am missing the variety of a filter coffee or a cold capuccino or even nescafe. Do they only serve us espresso?

    • frenchforfoodies.com May 23, 2012 at 2:02 pm #

Indeed Nelly if you go to a standard café in Paris you will most likely be served a crappy espresso. Thus the list of places that serve the real thing! Enjoy

Another distinction is that typical cafés in Paris use boxed/shelf-stable milk, whereas the purists on this list would all use fresh milk. (I’m 99% sure they all do) Parisians are just so *used* to drinking an espresso — my boyfriend thinks putting milk or sugar into coffee is deguellasse (needless to say we don’t start our days drinking café au lait out of a bowl, unfortunately!).

KB serves all kinds of drip coffee. It takes a little time because it’s done to order, but it’s great!
